An update on our Climb for Henry

Following on from our January Mountain challenge a team of Alpha Group employees, associates, friends and family members pledged to walk the Llanberris Path up Mount Snowdon on the 7th March in ‘a climb for Henry’.

In the weeks before the event, we kept a steady eye on the weather and just under a fortnight prior to the 7th one of our South Wales trainers advised that due to the poor conditions it was potentially too dangerous to take a large inexperienced group on the Mountain.

We decided to reschedule to a date later in the year to take the walk together.

However, Shaun Jackaman (MD) had prepaid accommodation arranged so he decided with his wife Myra, Emma (daughter) and Delana (Henry’s girlfriend) to continue with the walk independently, on the premise that if the weather was poor and unsafe, they would cancel the walk and reschedule when the conditions were better.

Below Emma tells us how their day went:

“We set off on the walk from the start of the Llanberris route about 9.30am. The weather at the foot of the mountain was dry but overcast. The path was busy for the winter time and we met various friendly walkers from all over the UK.

At the halfway house café the weather was starting to become a lot wetter, with reduced viability.  A little bit longer along and the winds started blowing!  We met many walkers making their descent who advised that getting to the summit was not possible due to the snow, ice, winds and visibility.

We managed to make it past Allt Moses at about 11.30am and on reaching Cwm Glas Back (900m) we decided that we could not go any further and would have to reach the summit with the group another day.

We are all so extremely grateful for everyone’s sponsorship, in memory of Henry and helping to raise vital awareness about diabetes. At the time of writing we have raised a total of over £1,300 for the excellent work that Diabetes UK do. If you wish to support us, you can donate here.”
