Case Study – Breathing Apparatus Industrial Wearer Course

Including Chemical Protection Suits

Our training allows us to work with a wide variety of businesses and sectors. We often work closely with our customers to provide training that is bespoke to their industry and their specific circumstances, such as this recent customer who required specific Breathing Apparatus training including Gas Tight Suits.

The client

As an international manufacturer of resin products supplying industries such as nuclear power, potable water, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, this client operates in a high-risk environment. They have also been part of the supply chain of developing new vaccines used in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. With a number of large warehouses in the UK, they have various confined spaces onsite, such as storage tanks and vessels.

Bespoke course content

The customer required training specifically for a new process and product they were installing on site including Bromine, a highly Toxic and Corrosive liquid. This required them to be trained in the use of Full Breathing Apparatus. The course attendees had previously been trained in the use of escape sets on a Medium Risk Confined Space course and this bespoke course built on the pre-existing skills and knowledge of the attendees.

During the course, some of the areas covered included:

  • safe donning and doffing
  • pre use checks
  • emergency procedures whilst wearing self-contained breathing apparatus

During the Chemical Protection Suit part of the training, delegates were taught how to don and doff the suit correctly with the assistance of an assistant, and how to remove them from the suit should there be an emergency. Bromine can attack the Chemical Protection Suit and start to eat away at it should it come into contact with the suit. The trainer also covered safety zoning in case of accidental spillage of the chemical, the safe decontamination of the suit and the bagging up and cleaning of the suits, if they were to become decontaminated with the chemical.

COVID-19 safety measures

The course was conducted in a suitable training room with the practical training element being undertaken inside and outside whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines. To ensure everyone’s safety, the course was run with reduced numbers and with all the COVID-19 procedures in place (more information on this can be found here). Amongst other measures, full decontamination of the equipment before use, between each training session and each delegate using the equipment and at the end of each day was conducted.

Our Breathing Apparatus Industrial Wearer including Chemical Protection Suit training can be customised to any industry so please do get in touch with our team to discuss your requirements.
