Case Study – First Aid at Work Training for an Estate Agency

In this case study, we look at how Alpha Training delivered a series of First Aid at Work Training courses for local estate agency Henry Adams.

As well as working with large national companies, Alpha also work with a wide range of local businesses.

The client

In 2021, one of these local businesses was Henry Adams. Widely known for their Estate Agency services with 16 branches in Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire, they have a team of 150 staff whose places of work vary as they cover Residential Sales and lettings, Holiday Lettings, New Homes, Development Land, Valuations and Surveys, Planning, commercial, Rural and a Fine Art Saleroom between their local office branches as well as in the domestic buildings they let and sell.

Chief Executive Ian Wiggett saw a need to train more of their staff in First Aid at Work to ensure a more consistent, ongoing First Aid cover – both for the benefit of their staff, as well as clients, tenants and potential property buyers should an emergency arise.

The training

Henry Adams approached Alpha to deliver training for three groups of eight staff at a time. It was important to the client that the groups would include a mixture of staff from different offices and levels of seniority. Alpha liaised closely with the team to book three sessions in November, fitting around the customers’ needs and schedule.

The training was delivered at the Training Academy at Head Office in West Sussex with a mixture of classroom learning and practical exercises outside and in the hangar.

It is important that the training delivered is as realistic and relatable as possible, and scenarios play a big part in helping delegates retain information and practice how to respond. As part of the training, one of the vehicles parked at the Training Academy was used to role play someone having a heart attack. This enabled the group to consider the dangers present for the casualty and the first aider in a similar setting.

Considering the nature of Henry Adams’ business, the trainer looked at scenarios that would occur in a variety of environments. This included role playing a 999 call and led to discussing other factors such as post-traumatic stress caused by incidents.

The feedback

Here’s some of the feedback from the booker and delegates:

“Sign of a good course people coming back straight away with comments/feedback/questions such as “Where is the first aid kit?”

“Delegates left enthused”

“I raised a question and the staff were great in answering it”

The trainer Joe Sacco’s feedback was “Some good questions from delegates, especially around a delegate who was born with her organs in the opposite side to where they would be normally. This raised questions about the defibrillator and generated a good discussion. It was important for the group to understand how they would treat her, especially using the defib.’’

We were able to share this information with the other two groups so that the staff would know what to do in an emergency situation.
