Water Safety Training

Who is this course for?

The course is aimed at workers involved in working in or near water in a non-rescue capacity.

Aim

 

To give delegates an awareness of the hazards associated with water, the knowledge to carry out basic land-based (Shout, Reach, and Throw) rescue techniques and gain a knowledge of the risks associated with water, basic safety measures required to keep everyone safe.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will be aware of how to state the hazards associated with working near water and the safety measures to be put in place when working near water. The awareness of the physiological effects of water and how to identify the basic characteristics and hazards of the water environment. The delegates will gain an understanding of flowing water hydrology, have an appreciation of the difficulties associated ice, mud and other unstable surfaces and a knowledge of the prioritised approach to rescue attempts.

Delivery Method

A combination of classroom based activity, syndicate working and presentation/demonstrations, practical application. A wide range of video and photographic material is used to enhance the learning experience for delegates.

Assessment and Certification

Continual assessment process leading to certification on successfully completing the course.

    Aims and Objectives:

    To provide delegates with the knowledge and practical ability to select and inspect appropriate Work at Height equipment, including portable ladders and stepladders and PPE for access or a specific task. Correctly and safely use portable ladders, stepladders and associated equipment and PPE, in accordance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

      Aims and Objectives:

      To provide delegates with the knowledge and practical ability in the safe use of fixed ladders, including cat ladders, with pre-installed fall arrest systems, for the purpose of access. Correctly and safely use fall arrest and work positioning equipment and PPE to work from a fixed ladder for a specific task, in accordance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

          Who is this course for?

          These units is for those working in a high risk environment and includes preparing to work safely, entering and exiting high risk confined spaces safely, using equipment and tools safely, following procedures and dealing with emergencies and as the entry controller/top person who controls entry and arrangements for confined spaces without entering them. It includes the duties of an entry controller, pre-entry procedures, entry into and exit from the confined space, maintaining communications and initiating and controlling emergency procedures.

          Aims and Objectives 

          The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for a high risk related confined space environment.

          This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas:

          Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations or where the operative is working in or near water or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding

          Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering, and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunneling.

            Who is this Assessment Only route for?

            The Assessment Only Route (two days) are for those working in a high risk and rescue environment, who require re-certification without undertaking the full 6160 courses.

            As a delegate you need to provide evidence of competency and experience of working in a confined space alongwith your recently expired 6160-03 and 6160-08 certificates (within one month) and on the day,  delegate will complete a Self Audit Knowledge and Experience assessment paper.

            The Assessment Only route allows delegate to demonstrate that they already meet all of the standards with the respective 6160 qualification without the need for any further training.

            Aims and Objectives 

            For each 6160 qualification, the aim of this Assessment Only route is as follows:

            • one practical observation, assessed by the use of practical observation criteria
            • one short answer theory test, assessed by either knowledge paper A or B

            Both practical and theory need to be successfully passed to achieve the qualifications.

              This course allows learners to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required by those who need to work in high risk confined spaces. It also allows learners to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required by those who need to work at high risk confined spaces but who are not required, or are unable, to enter and work in the confined space. Their role will involve acting as an entry controller (top person) on site for those entering the confined space.

              Delivery Method/Assessment with Certification

              • This course is assessed using practical observations of skills and a multiple choice knowledge test
              • Delegates must pass both in order to gain the qualification
              • The practical assessment will take place in a controlled confined space environment that meets the Awarding Body criteria
              • The multiple choice knowledge test will take place under controlled examination conditions

                This unit is for anyone who enters and works specifically in confined spaces and accesses tunnels and shafts. It includes preparing to work safely in tunnels and shafts and how to deal with emergency situations using the correct equipment.

                Aims and Objectives

                The aim of this unit is to assess the delegates ability to apply the skills and knowledge required for carrying out work activities in tunnels and shafts where there may be a reasonably foreseeable specified risk.

                This unit also covers using tools and equipment safely and following safety procedures.
